I am looking at purchasing a 2001 Glastron 185 ski and fish. It has the volvo penta 195 hp motor. It looks to be in pretty good shape, but I am susspecting that it went through a teenagers, hard on equipment, years. I guess my first question is if this is a good boat or not. We are a family of four that has a 1986 Bayliner Capri with a 85 hp force motor now and it might be getting a little small for pulling the kids out of the water on skis. They are 8 and 10 but they are big for thier age. So here are my questions:

Is this a good boat?
It is not the vex hul is that an issue?
It has a Raytheon fish finder, any good?
There are some scratches in the hull, I have some pictures, can this be easly repaired? Is this something that a body shop could handle?
Is there anything I should be looking for when looking at this boat?

I have attached some pictures of the hull scratches. There is also a hole in the back of the boat that he filled with marine caulking. I would like to get these area fixed.

Any help would be great.

It all depends on if the boat was maintained properly. Well maintained it would be a good rig for you. Poorly maintained and it will be a PITA.

I am trying to work him down on the price so I can get the scratches fixed, it looks like the gelcoat on the blue got scratched through to the white. It would be nice to get that fixed, but I am sure it will not be cheep. The highschool boy worries me a little. Does it take a lot to hurt the motor on a boat like this?

Thanks for the info.

In all honesty, a motor or outdrive can be permanently hurt in a short few minutes. Running it with low water pressure, running it with soem type of blockage over the water intake screen, propping it wrong and either straining or over revving the motor, not doing the suggested maintenance, etc. If you really don't know if the boat and motor were well maintained, then I would walk away.

Can a boat go through a presales inspection like a car? Could the compression be checked, tests done etc....... prior to me writing the check?

You can hire a surveyor to inspect the boat for you. Cosmetic issues should be taken with a grain of salt. Where I boat the tide, current and wind can play havoc at the docks and you will make contact. I don't know anyone who has not bitten the dock and have the scars to prove it. A surveyor will cost but if you are concerned then it is worth it. I can't tell in the pictures but are you sure the blue is gel coat and not a vinyl graphic? I have a Bayliner 175 with a vinyl graphic all the way around the boat and until I scratched it I didn't know it was not gel-coat.

Cosmetic issues can show how well the boat was or wasn't maintained and cared for. If someone lets the outside look like crap then they most likely do the same for the internal components that can't be seen.

You can do a full compression test however if the boat was poorly maintained such as not changing the oil it will make the difference of getting 20 years out of a motor or only getting 5 years.
