Finally attempted to start my motor today.
I was able to crank the motor 2-3 X's @10s ea, 30s rest. with the ignition disabled to get fuel to the carb and re-prime (used a primer tool prior and 1/2 drill"...do not use a 3/8" or you'll burn it up) the oil system. Hooked up the ignition, went to crank the motor up and was met with the sound of the starter freewheeling (hi-pitched whine). Took off the starter, attempted a lube of the shaft/gear per the suggestion of another forum post - which definitely seemed to free up the gear, replaced and tried again... It engaged the first two attempts, then again proceeded to freewheel.
Here is some background info...the starter and battery have sat unused for probably 4 years. Battery is fully charged, doesn't appear to be stressed at all when the starter was engaged; however, on the last trip to Autozone to verify the charge, they indicated that the battery had "failed" their diagnosis test. It needs to be replaced, but I just haven't done it yet. There doesn't seem to be significant corrosion on the starter connections - and again, the actual starter motor freewheels happily.
If I had to guess, I'd say the solenoid is bad. Is there any way to perform a diagnosis? Should i just replace the damn thing? Try and seek out a local starter rebuild shop?
Thanks,
Joe
