I have a 2001 Johnson 115hp. Just replaced the powerhead and had it set up(timing & idle) at a boat mechanic shop. Went through the recommended break-in with no problem other than a de-cell knock. I have put about 20 hours on the new powerhead. I was out the other day and was towing tubes, skiers and running around for about 4 hours. I shut the motor down a few times to mess around and had no problem with starting up and running. On the way to the dock I was running about ¾ throttle for about 10-15 minutes and the motor suddenly lost power and shut down. I was unable to restart and had to be towed to the dock. When I got the boat home and tried to start it, it still did not start. It cranked about half a turn and sounded like something clacked inside and did not turn again. The sound happened so fast that I really could not tell where it came from though. I pulled the plugs and looked into the top two cylinders and the pistons looked fine(could not see into the bottom 2 cylinders). I know that the engine has a safety feature to it that if it overheats it will shut itself down but if that was the case it should restart. The previous powerhead burned a piston do the timing being set 10 degrees to fast. My question is what would be the first thing to look for. I am not going to be happy if I have to replace the powerhead again.
