So, my son has an overheating problem on his 2001 Johnson 115. Impeller replaced already, but still has overheating alarm going off. I'm guessing thermostats and or pressure relief valves (Poppets). Before I volunteer to help, I'm wondering if this model has the nightmare thermostat housing at the bottom of the exhaust cover where you have to remove lower cowling or cut a section out to get the bolts out that hold the thermostat housing off. What a disaster that is!! I'm guessing that's just part of owning a v4 Evinrude/Johnson outboard. I've never worked on his motor before, it's been incredibly reliable, but even if we just wanted to do some type of chemical flush, I'd want to take the thermostats out. I'm hoping there is an improved configuration that the older 80's model I replaced thermostats on in the past. Hate to have to cut the lower cowling to get to those thermostats, but would hate to have to remove the small bolts that hold it on since this is a salt water motor.
Thanks for whatever info you guys have. Good or bad news, I need to know what I'm getting into.

That is a totally different motor.---A 60 degree looper style.-----Thermostats are easy to work on, found under a cover at the top of the cylinder head.

Fantastic! That's what I was hoping to hear! I would have helped him out no matter what it would take, but I'm glad It won't be the BEAST of a job that I was expecting. Wish I could find a video, but typing in the year model doesn't seem to help narrow things down.

Simple job if plastic pieces at top of cylinder head do not break.
