2001 Johnson 30 hp. Starts and idles fine for the most part. As soon as i start to open up the throttle. Witch i do manually on the carburetor. It throttles up fine but as soon as i get to a certain rpm it just starts revving all by itself. Even after i let the linkage go on the carburetor it keeps revving like somebody is giving it gas. Sometimes it will go back down and start idling and sometimes it will keep revving higher and higher until i hit the kill switch.

Just cleaned carburetor. New rebuild kit. Checked fuel pump and filter. New plugs

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 2001 Johnson 30hp rev problem

well you do not throttle up by moving the carb, it does not move the timing plate. also you do not rev a motor over 1500 rpms, in neutral. what you are getting is a runaway motor. you have to move the throttle linkage, by turning the tiller handle, or moving the throttle cable connector.

i hope you have the motor on muffs when you are doing this.

Re: 2001 Johnson 30hp rev problem

Thanks for the timely reply.
Well, pardon my ignorance in these matters. I am quite new to boat engines.

Everything you said makes perfect since. The motor is in a barrel of water. That's how we have been testing it out. It wont pee water on the muffs. Not sure why.Going to try it out with controls now.

Is it ok to remove the prop when I run it in a trash can? Or does it really matter?

Thanks again
