hello all,

I have a Johnson j70plsis 2001 70 hp 2 stroke that was hard to start, it turned out to be a no spark issue. It would start after long periods of cranking, after that it would stark immediately when the key was turned.
did some troubleshooting with cdi specs and turned out i had a bad stator.
replaced stator, timing based, spark plugs, plug wires, coils are all well per ohm readings, battery checked and good, new ignition switch.
I still have no spark, it is driving me nuts, I don’t know what to do. Help please!

thank you.

How are you checking spark? Are you pushing the key in while starting? It sounds more like a fuel issue for starting than spark. Is your primer working.

I am checking spark with a spark tester. 100% sure is mot fuel
related.
i put on a new pack before I replaced the stator and timer without change in symptoms and returned it, I have ordered a new PP again, should be here Sunday. It would be great if it works with the new pack but that is a lot of $$ in electronics.

It spins the flywheel fast enough, I think!
i did pull it apart, quite a bit of carbon, bit of a burned
smell, could have been from the lubricant I put on the gear earlier today.
cleaned up the carbon and reassembled. Will reinstall and try tomorrow.

I doubt it, i took it off and cleaned it but haven’t put it back on. it was spinning the flywheel fast enough, I think,l. On the tachometer it read like 800 rpm while I was cranking it.
sounds normal, right?

Cableguychris 71,

have you troubleshoot anything yet?
I am the one that started this thread.
I spoke to a mechanic and he said he is oretty sure is a weak starter.
have it ordered, coming in tomorrow.

Post #5 suggests taking the starter apart for inspection.----With a simple ohm test you would know that it is the culprit or not.-----A " no money spent " step to take.-----Good luck with the new starter.

The starter smoked when I cranked ot after inspection and cleaned it.
at $80 is worth the peace of mind of having a new one.
I am always willing to take the no money spent route.

So it turned out I had a bad stator and bad powerpack. Replaced both plus starter and trigger base. So my entire electric system has been overhauled, hopefully it lasts another 19 years!

Just a tip if you don't mind: you really need to do voltage tests if , after good resistance test. Resistance is only telling you the wires are good. get a dva meter and test the powerpack for output as per the manual. do the same for the charge coils and ignition coils. i think it's great it's fixed , but i hope your mechanic didn't recommend replacing parts based on a hunch.

I tested everything with a dva adapter but it was very difficult to diagnose because my issue was intermittent.
