2001 Johnson 70hp - rebuildable?

I picked up a 2001 Johnson 70 hp (j70plsis) a few years ago. It would start right up and idle but wouldn't go without stalling until it warmed up. Then it would hit about 5300 rpms open water. Compression was weak, 90/90/72, and lots of sludge dripping out of the lower unit even after new seals.

Long story short, I ended up fully tearing it down and found what appears to be damage from oil starvation. Bottom cylinder had the lowest compression, but the middle was the most damaged. The crank journal is worn and the piston cracked, though i didnt see and obviously worn bearing rollers. All cylinders are scored. I'm leaning towards parting out. Is a rebuild worth it? Luckily I was able to put together a working 72 Evinrude 65hp triumph from 2 freebies, so I've still been on the water.

Crankshaft is scrap.-----The #2 cylinder is usually the worst.-----With 3 new pistons and used crank and rods it might be worth it.

Doable for say around $1500 if you find good used crankshaft and rods.----3 new o/s pistons, gasket set , water pump kit.----And do the work yourself.

I've been keeping my eye out for a crank. Do you always replace rods with the pistons? I've seen OS rebuild kits with new bearings, pistons, and gaskets for around $520. Are those a good way to go or buy separately?

BTW, I replaced the water pump and all lower unit seals just before the teardown.

The WSM kit is excellent. Look at the top of the pistons for part #s or if they are oversized already.
