I have a 2001 Lund 1700 Fisherman powered by a 2000 Yamaha 130 HP 2 stroke that I purchased this year. I put it in the water and it really sits in the water too much and plows. The rpm are way too high at a cruising speed (4400 @ 28 mph). I tried a stainless prop (stiletto stainless advantage size 13.25 x 19 Pitch), and it didn't really make a difference.

I also tried a Merc prop, a laserII that was 14 x 19 pitch and it worked fairly good. I achieved 33 mph @ 4100 rpm. The problem is that the mercury prop didn't quite fit properly with my Yamaha lower unit (it was too large), so I can't just go out and buy the prop that I tried. I can't even find a Stiletto Stainless 19 pitch prop that has a 14" diameter.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Is this just a prop problem or would it have something to do with the height of the motor....or do I need to install a trim tab?

Ayuh,... It sounds like a Hull, or Set-up problem to Me....
The hull sounds Heavy,..?? as in Over-weight,... Sogging foam,..?? Too much gear,..??
Are you trimming it Up,..??

Re: 2001 Lund W/ 130 Yamaha..plowing

With the Merc prop that I tried it trimmed not too bad and I got alot better results. Top end of 44mph, and cruising speed was ok as I stated above. the problem is the Stiletto Prop I have, and the aluminum. Both props are supposed to work for this boat, but both of them can't get the hull out of the water.
This is why I feel that it might be a setup problem as well. The motor is set all of the way down if I remember correctly....would bringing it up a hole or two make a difference?

Ryan, welcome to Iboats prop forum and I will try to help you as much as I can but without more information no one can help you, and I will tell you I need more information than anyone else. But if you would like my help fill this form out and I will help you as much as I can, if you would prefer to not go to this much trouble there are other people who will gladly help you.

Just copy this form to your computer and paste it into a word processing program and fill it out, then paste it into your post.

Iboats Boat and Motor Info

1. Year, make and model of boat

2. Length, width and base weight of boat, look for boat decal on back of boat

2a.What is the maximum recommended HP for your boat

3. Number of people and gallons of gas normally on boat

4. What do you use the boat for

5. Is it a Deep Vee and if so how many degrees of Deadrise

6. Year, make. manufacturer and model of motor

7. HP and gear ratio of motor IMPORTANT
If you don?t know the ratio, you need to pull the plugs out and put a piece of tape across the prop and the lower unit and then cut it between the prop and the housing then do the same thing on the flywheel and turn the motor until the tape lines up with each other on the prop, it is easier if two people do this, so one can watch the prop while the other counts the revolutions of the motor

8. Manufacturer?s recommended Wide Open Throttle (WOT) range

9. Anti-ventilation Plate height above keel of boat if it is an outboard in inches, use a board under the keel and sticking out to the anti ventilation plate for a reference

10. Is it a bass boat or does it have a pad bottom

11. Does it have a hydrafoil, dolefin or trim tabs

12. Manufacturer, model, diameter, pitch, number of blades and whether SS or aluminum props I IMPORTANT
1.
2.
3.

13. WOT RPM and speed from your current prop and how much gas and how many people were in the boat for the test data and is the speed by GPS. Make sure you trim the prop up until it starts ventilating and then just trim in until it quits ventilating. If you do not have a tach you can buy a Tiny Tach for $ 50
RPM ___________ Speed ___________ No. of people ____________ Gal. Gas ________

14. Are you at sea level or a higher elevation, give us the elevation in feet

15. Has your motor been tuned up lately and have you checked that the carburetor butterfly is opening all the way by only using the control on the console, checked compression, looked at the plugs and checked spark, is the bottom of the boat clean and barnacle free, all of the foregoing could be the reason your prop is not attaining full RPM

16. How long has this prop been on the boat and why, at this time, do you think it is the wrong prop

17. Does the prop show any damage that you can see

18. What problems are you trying to cure or what are you looking for the boat to do that it is not doing the way you think it should or to your expectations

19. If you are trying to attain a better cruising speed and fuel savings or trying to attain a faster speed I will want you to take your boat and run it with 1 or 2 people and give me the RPM and speed readings starting at 3,000 RPM in 500 RPM increments all the way to WOT.
1. 3000 RPM
2. 3500 RPM
3. 4000 RPM
4. 4500 RPM
5. 5000 RPM
6. 5500 RPM
7. 6000 RPM

REMEMBER, The numbers I give you will be NO better than the information you give me

The only thing I ask of you is to come back and give me a report of WOT RPM and speed for my database.

I happen to be very familiar with this boat with many different engines...
If you are not seeing a MINIMUM of 5700RPM at wide open throttle with this rig, you need to look at a few things #1 being the tach.
This boat is not known to "plow" unless ya got about 3 big folks sitting up front.
Is the AV-plate (plate above prop) even with or close to even with the keel/flush with bottom?

"The rpm are way too high at a cruising speed (4400 @ 28 mph)."
I hope this isn't WOT...

There is no such thing as a stiletto adv. series in 14" for that unit, but don't get too worried about diameter, I think you have other issues.
When you say it "sits low"....what part are you talking about??? stern, bow??? the whole boat??? explain a bit please.

When you say plowing, do you mean the bow dragging under throttle, or the boat not seeming to lift out of the water completely?

I have been chasing the later on my 1750 Fish Hawk/130 Yamaha since new. My bow can come out of the water, but the boat seems not to lift out of the water. Meaning the gunwale spray, even in calm conditions, starts well in front of the center consoule.

I have watched many Lunds running with this attitude.

I run a stock 13 1/4x21 Yamaha Black SS prop, and turn 5300-5400 RPM at WOT. I have tried many props, the best results was a K Series Yamaha Pro 20 pitch, it had noticeable boat lift. It turned 5600 RPM at WOT, but I could not afford the $750 CDN $$s price tag.

So I recently bought a Michigan Wheel Apollo 13 1/8X19, but have not been able to try it. Hopefully the extra cup will help out with what I am looking for. But I will not be able to tell you until May.

P.S. 130 Yamaha's preffer to run closer to thier Max RPM range, 6000, than thier lower RPM range 5000 RPM.

The boat pops out of the water fine, but once it's on plane I can't get it to lift much as I trim it, so the spray is up to or in front of the drivers cockpit. Typically I would think that I could trim the boat up and get the bow to lift so less of it is dragging in the water.

I checked the trim tab on the motor and moved the motor up one hole so it would be even with the bottom of the boat. It seem to make a very little difference.

I looked this weekend and with the stiletto prop I was getting about 38 - 40 mph at 5800 - 6000 rpm (depending on the trim). I've driven alot of boats and I think I should be able to trim the motor with a Stainless prop until the boat starts to almost bounce......then trim it down a touch to achieve the proper ride. With this setup, the front won't lift out and it slows down the top end, but more importantly to me, it reduces fuel milage during crusing speeds of 28 -34 MPH.

The puzzling thing for me was that the Mercury Laser II (14 x 19) seemed to work fine with the boat / motor setup that I have. I would be happy if I could just find a prop that would work as well as it did that fits on my motor. Would a 4 blade prop have more lift to it? or does anyome know of a prop that would fit a 130 Hp Yamaha two stroke...that preforms as well as a laserII?

I would like to see how your michigan wheel prop works out for you. I have the same problem, the boat does not want to lift out of the water and I get the spray by the console. Some people I have talked to say the Mercury props are just superior and that is why I got such good results with the LaserII, any thoughts?
