2001 Maxum Performance Problem?

Greetings,

Our family, excitedly, bought our first boat. It was used w/120 hours on it and the previous owner really seemed tedious about the upkeep. It has a merc 5.0 220hp running a high five ss 23 pitch prop. When I got it the high five had three of the vent plugs removed(supposed to increase hole shot). I am 215 pound slalom skier so I expected the engine performance to get me going pretty easily. Some other lighter skiers and myself found it really sluggish first couple trips out. I plugged the holes on the prop and this did improve the sluggish starts and it planes quicker(more solid water I presume). However, with only a regular five person load(2 small kids inc.) it still holds at around 3900 rpm and tops around 40 mph WOT. It does not seem to be misfiring and feels strong throughout a session on the lake but I think these numbers are really off what they should be.
When I bought it the owner said he had only used 91 octane and never had any problems. It had sat several months(previous owner had a severe injury) before I bought it so I have been filling it with 91 each trip out and trying to run it as much as I can. I feel if I keep running it at this low rpm the plugs may foul, if they haven't already. I also don't know if the 23 pitch would have this much effect on the performance with such a normal load. Gas, prop changes, tune-up?
At any rate, before I take it in to the local shop if anyone could give me some direction on performance or mechanical solutions I would appreciate it.

Thanks for reading a novel from a newbie!

Welcome aboard!
I need to do some research to see what your final drive ratio is so we can determine what is off and what isn't.
When you plug the holes on the prop, it should make the hole-shot worse...removing all plugs should make it better, unless it's venting very badly. Do you have the trim all the way Down/in when taking off?
Are you using GPS to measure speed?
How long is the boat, or boat weight?

Re: 2001 Maxum Performance Problem?

This is a 19 foot vessel weighing 3900 lbs. plus the 900 lbs of cargo on average. I do see a 1.47 ratio marking on the stern drive if that helps. I understand the science of the plugs to allow the prop to turn faster at a slow speed but I am thinking the drag of slalom(with me especially) might be too much to allow the prop to bite in the water. I ordered some plugs with smaller diameter holes to try and experiment with this venting also. I do have the trim all the way in on starts and I am only using the instruments on the cockpit.

Thanks for your interest!

This is your first boat. Before you do anything else...do you understand the importance of trim adjustments and how to adjust trim for optimum performance?

Edited... Oops... missed the part in your earlier reply on trim...

Have you asked the PO (previous owner) about the boat's performance with that prop? If the PO had 3 vents open in a particular size, I betcha he had it adjusted pretty well. (High-5 is a pretty 'fancy' prop).
I think you're on the right track by tuning it.

Re: 2001 Maxum Performance Problem?

With the numbers you have given on the boat/engine, the new Merc selector says that 5.0 is too small for that boat, so I changed the weight to 3400lbs and got a max pitch recommendation of 16...
Anyway you can re-figure your weights?

which modle do you have ? i have a 2000SC 19'6" and its not anywere near 3900#

The compleat boat and trailer and stuff doesent even weight that much ?

Unless you have a 2100SC which is a much bigger boat and wider beam

Re: 2001 Maxum Performance Problem?

I am sorry to say I guessed the boat's weight off the new maxum 1900 specs w/trailer. The same website has the boat only weight w/4.3 std engine listed at 3000 lbs. I assume my boat w/the 5.0 is just over 3K instead of the previous listed. I think I should focus on the pitch size. Sunday I was out running performance tests and on the calmest lake water varying the trim I still could only near 4100 rpm and 44 mph on my instruments. I had about 575 lbs between 3 adults and one child.

Thanks for your input.

OK - you are going to find that you need to be in the 17" pitch range.

Maybe you can borrow one or find a used one to try.

I am betting you will be very happy with the performance improvement.
