Hello,

New to this board, and just got a new (used) boat with a 150 HP Merc (2001 Saltwater).

Couple of questions:

-The water comes out the back hot. This is a new thing to me, as my old motors peed hard and it was cool water. It steams a bit too. Is this normal? What temp is it supposed to be?

-When cold, it's not peeing much. When the RPM's go up, it will start. Is this from a thermostat, or a sign that the impeller is bad?

-The alarms... I want to check ALL the alarms for operations, but I don't have a manual. Does anyone have any input in how to do that?

-Also, I am getting an audible squeel every once in a while. The last time, I shut down the motor, and restarted and it went away. Almost acting like there is a short or ground somewhere.

-What type of gas consumption should I assume per hour at full tilt? Seems like this motor really sucks down the gas. Is it better at a slower cruising RPM? Any RPM in particular work good for anyone?

Any input would be appreciated!

Re: 2001 MERC 150 Questions

the water is hot , the engine does not tell-tale untill thermo's open ..that's it why it doesnt pee good untill warmed up .

gas consumption on any outboard ( opti/fitch excepted) will be approx one gallon per ten HP per hour ..that engine can burn 15 gallons a hour when you are "on it "

speeds around 3500/4500 rpm will give you a little better milage , but not much ..

As to alarms there are three

two oil , and one overtemp

there are numerous threads on how to check on this forum ..read , read read ..,Or get a manual\
As to squeel . lube the starter shaft ( oil ) where the "bendix runs up and down on it ..sometimes they stick .."hard on bendix gear bushing )
