2001 merc 240 efi won't rev past 5k

my low hours (less than 100) jet boat engine, won't go past 5k, really sounds awful, rattle, not pinging, when I push it past 4k. (but I never ran with engine cover off before, to compare) Fresh plugs, fuel filter and water sperator are not clogged. key on engine off I have 34psi fuel pressure, at idle all plugs getting spark that jumps 1/2" gap. Always run premium merc quicksliver oil. Ran fine in Dec. started this last month. have been thru 2 tanks of gas. one time after running a couple of hours it just cleared up and ran fine on way back to dock, but never since. I was thinking of checking fuel pressure while rpms at 4k, and spark as well, or getting pig tail to be able to check resitance reading of stator and such as manual describes.

Never heard of a Mercruser 240 EFI, got an engine serial number handy??

from my paper work it looks like<br />0E405932 is serial #<br />S240J3OYS IS MODEL # <br /><br />If those are no good I will pull out boat and <br />look under engine cover, <br />thanks
