I have a 2001 Mercury 60 bigfoot on my pontoon. Sometimes it runs very good, sometimes not. If I leave it sitting for more than a few days and go to turn it over, it will leak 2 cycle oil out of the prop and onto the ground. When it starts, it smokes very bad at first, then clears off. It will run, but not very good. I will have the throttle all the way down and only running about 4000 rpms. I can rev it and it sounds fine with a slight miss, but very slow under a load. I notice excessive oil use at first and then seems to be normal after it gets going. I can run it at full throttle for about an hour and it will usually clear off and run right. If I take it out every few days, I usually have no problems at all. I used to think it was carb problems and they needed cleaned. Now I'm wondering if the 2 cycle oil is causing the problems. I could take the oil reservoir off and just mix it myself, but that sucks. Any help is appreciated.

The oil injection system is apparently leaking oil into the carbs. Is the engine tilted up during OFF periods?

This is a gravity feed system and the only way raw oil can enter engine is thru faulty seal on oil pump shaft.

No it's not tilted up. Is the oil pump shaft seal something that I could replace or should it be taken to a professional?

You can remove the pump and check the backside of it to see if seal has failed, only problem is seal is not offered for sale and pump is a assembly. Maybe you will get lucky and its just backed out..
