2001 Mercury 90hp 2strok 3 cyl.. Readout on Lowrance while idling is 12.3v. I was told by local mercury dealer should be 13.7v to 14v. I changed the voltage regulator with no change. Ive been trolling for ours for the past 6 nights with no issues. Should i be worried about the stator going soon? The tach is acting irregular, small burn marks on the the AC (yellow) wires coming from the stator where the connectors are. Any tips on testing the stator, or any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Measure the voltage at the battery with no accessories on, engine idling. Now turn on all the accessories you have, especially lights, to maximize load. Keep it under 30A.

Now read the voltage again. It should read less. Rev the motor a bit and see if the voltage increases. If so,the VR is working and the charging system is working.

Stators have resistance tests. You could test yours, but beyond that, I know of no way to predict their demise.

@ Chris1956 thanks for the response! it seems like the lowrance unit is reading about 1.2v different than my meter. But with the motor off I'm getting 12.3v at the battery. With the engine running (2000 rpm not idle) only jumps to about 12.7v. I know the charging system is working or else id have a dead battery by now, but should it be working stronger than what it is?

There is a test to prove that the charging system is working at full capacity. It involves adding a heavy load (say 40Amps) to stress the charging system and VR. Unless you have the correct equipment, this test is best done by a dealer (if they even do it).

usually we test as I outlined and figure the VR either works or it doesn't.
