2001 mercury outboard 40 hp elpto 3cyl

after running motor for 20 minutes for 1st time this year, began to rev high. pulled back on throttle and motor ran o.k. at low speed. appeared that lower unit not operating properly when given gas. tried speeding up several times, but continued high rev. Water pump running ok. could it be lack of lube for lower unit? drained lube from lower unit, which was very low. have not put in water since.

More than likely it's a spun prop hub.<br /><br />Easy to check.<br /><br />1. Scribe a line on the outer prop hub.<br /><br />2. Scribe a corresponding line on the rear of the prop shaft.<br /><br />3. Run the engine under load.<br /><br />Do the corresponding lines still match up?<br /><br />If not, spun hub.
