Evening all,

Browsing for a cruiser for next season. Looking for feedback on the above listed make/model. The boat in particular comes with twin 5.0l mercs with alpha 1 stern drives. I've asked the seller whether they are carb or EFI... it does have a 5Kw Koehler which is a must for me.

Are Monterey decent boats, respectable in the boating community (unlike Bayliner for example)? I would be using it primarily on lake st.clair, but would also venture into lake erie so I'd like something that can handle some big water if necessary.

Feedback on this make/model is much appreciated.

THanks

Re: 2001 Monterey 282 SC

With used boats its all about condition. A 12 year old $150,000 new cruiser could be a peace of junk next to a 12 year old very well taken care of Bayliner. Boats fall apart fast if issues are not addressed when they come up. If you like the boat look for hints of how well it was taken care of. Does the owner have all of the maintance records, a log of maintance, the original paperwork? Those would be good indicators of it being taken care of and would help justify the few hundret a survey would cost. If the owner had nothing on the boat besides a for sale sine, could not tell you when the impellers were last done etc than the boat may not be worth spending what a survay costs. Your call.

Re: 2001 Monterey 282 SC

I owned a 2005 282CR. Absolutely loved the boat. We had the twin 4.3L 220HP Merc V6's and BIII drives. It performed well, so the 5.0L engines will be a tad better. The hull is fantastic for it's size in rough water. Very smooth ride and handles like a much smaller boat. We are on our 2nd Monterey, and without question, they are very well made boats. Of course, how they have been taken care of is the most important. You should be okay with the Alpha drives, but duo prop drives are preferred. Any specific questions, just ask. I will be happy to give more details.

Thanks for commenting Ensign, but you really didn't address anything specific to the Monterey brand. I understand that even a the "Rolls Royce" of boats can be worth nothing if not maintained, but that's almost common sense, isn't it?

Let me rephrase my question: Does if purchased 'new', does anyone have any input on the quality of Monterey Cruisers - specifically SC model? Ie., interior details, cockpit layouts, solid hull (doesn't clang and shutter when hitting waves)?

Slip- yes, I would definitely prefer the DP outdrive, but with twin 5.0L's I think the power should be quite sufficient on a boat of this size, especially if they are EFI engines (a must for me). Tell me, do DP outdrives make for significant improvement when in the marina, for tight maneuvering due to the amount of water they propel - I would think they 'may' be more responsive? I'm really warming up to the DP stern drives.

Monterey's are decent quality boats, and are n good company with similar boats. . SeaRay, Chaparral, Four Winns, etc.

with twin engines, you will have decent maneuvering regardless of DP vs. single. So, if you like the boat, don't let the Alpha outdrives scare you away.

Ted is correct, twin engines give you good close quarter maneuvering, regardless of dual prop or single. The dual prop drives do help just a bit more in overall maneuverability in the marina . Perception of build quality in a boat can best be determined from actually owning the brand. A cursory glance at one in a boat show is a good start, but does not really tell you how solid they are put together, how well they handle varying conditions in the real world. I owned a Four Winns cruiser, have been on several Sea Ray's of the same size, and determined through my experience, that Monterey is built with solid construction, excellent materials, and their design and layout are great.

I think you are referring to my rank not screen name. From what I understand with dock side chat they are good boats. I have never heard anyone complain about them. In my point of view I would prefer the dual alpha over the dual bravo. Sooner or later you are going to trash a prop or even an outdrive and the bravo cost 3X more to fix than an alpha. You have twins so I would not worry about maneuverability.
