2001 Suzuki D70 Oil Light Reset Nightmare

End of last season had oil changed by dealer - D70 4-Stroke is the cleanest engine I have ever owned. I have probably 40 hours on it this season averaging 5mph on the back of my pontoon. Change oil light is coming on after it starts with the tone. I tried the reset procedures mentioned in the forum i.e., put the key into "on position" the starting tone goes off for 2-3 seconds then using some pliers I push in the red kill switch and pull it out 3 times within 7 seconds.

I have tried putting the key into the start position and doing the 3 kill switch on/off when the tone is still going on and no luck.

Oil is full, doesn't smell burnt, and is right at the top of the stick so its got oil

So after the above process, I put the key into the ignition, turn it on and the boat starts, the pee is flowing through the motor and it starts strong and runs for about 5-10 seconds then the oil alarm and light comes on then the alarm ends but the oil light stays light. If I goose the engine a bit in neutral the rev light kicks in.

Being on a pontoon, its a royal pain to haul to a dealer.

What I would like to do is see if I can reset the Oil alarm till the end of the season - September and have the dealer give it a once over just to make sure. However, I will haul her in as I don't want to burn the motor up.

Any thoughts?

The warning light/ alarm may not be caused by the motor requiring an oil change. Check out your owner's manual, there's a section regarding audible alarms. Depending on the sequence of "beeps" or warning light flashings, there may be another cause. I had the same problem on an '06 250 Suzuki, thought the same thing (oil light reset nightmare), but was wrong and the problem ended up being a faulty sensor, completely unrelated to the oil change warning.

Jot down the sequence of lights (two flashes, then three flashes, etc.) and refer to your manual or the Suzuki website. Best of luck with it.

Thanks for the response. With coffee in the morning I will check out the flashing sequence.

I will also look at the small user manual (green) that came with the motor - are the codes within the different sections or is there a table of them that I am missing?

Cheers. . .

The alarm sequences were in the large (> 8.5" x 11") owner's manual. Not sure exactly, but most likely under "troubleshooting". It's possible we have different owner's manuals.

One would think Suzuki would have a troubleshooting/ maintenance section on their website. I can't seem to find it.

Probably the easiest thing for you to do is check out the sequence, write it down, and contact the service department at your local Suzuki dealer. They'll be able to decipher the sequence and let you know what's wrong with the motor.

Thanks, I am not nuts. I have a green/white 8.5' x 6" owners manual for my D70T as the cover says. Just went out on the dock and. . . turn key on, 2 seconds all lights come on, tone as usual. All four of the indicators come on then go off and the Tac needle floats right up to around 1900rmp for about 3-4 seconds and then goes down to zero.

I start the unit, all indicators are normal, in about 5-7 seconds the Oil Light comes on and stays on, the beep starts every 10 seconds.

I am thinking of retrying the reset again - maybe I did it too fast. As from reading various postings, it sure sounds like its just a simple reset function.

Again, thanks for any and all advise.

Morning.

The oil change light is a blinking light. If the light is coming on and staying on then there is somrthing else wrong.

I am beginning to think its time to get the trailer and see if the local dealer can squeeze me in before the snow flys here in the midwest. I did sort out the engine hour test - which maps to my guesstamate of hours 800. .

So the 64 dollar question comes down to - if its just the "change oil" indicator that needs to be reset, does that condition cause the oil light to stay solid or flash.

That determines if she needs the doctor or something I can fiddle with.

Thanks.

The oil change indicator will flash. If it stays solid it is something else.

Thanks for the quick response. Time to "git-the-trailer" out and call the dealer.
