My father has a 150 HP Yamaha DI 6 that looses power intermittently. We will be going and just get on plane and then the motor dies then revs back up. Dies and then revs back up. It does this at around 3k rpms. Seems like that is the magic number. Are we looking at fuel or electrical issues?

Nobody??? It's a 2 stroke motor. Seems I keep reading about a VST that might be a problem. Looks like I will have to look into that unless someone points me in a different direction

Test things to see.
Monitor fuel pressures would be my first thought

Hope by this time the problem has been corrected. However, if it is not, you may be having thermostat issues, especially if the motor is used in salt water where corrosion is more of a problem. I just replaced the two thermostats in my 150, both were corroded badly, one was stuck open, I don't know what the other one was doing but think it may have been partially functional. In any event, if you have a stuck-open problem then the engine is not getting to the proper operating temp and won't perform. My dogging-down problem was really intermittent, but I haven't had the problem since the thermostats were replaced. Perhaps this will give you another area to explore.
