I have a counter rotating pair of the above listed outboards the starboard engine has no power and brakes down as the RPm's go up. It sounded like it was only running on 5. I pulled and changed all of the spark plugs and found that one was fouled really bad. After replacing all six i ran the engine and nothing changed. I pulled the plugs again and found the same plug was not fireing, it was as clean as when i put it in but really wet. Is there a test i can do on the sespected bad ignition coil or can it be swapped with one on the opposite engine? Are they all the same coils.

try a spark test, its faster and eaiser than a coil swap. take a standard old plug that is lnown good.open the gap to 1/4 -7/16ths of an inch. either hold it tigtly on the block and crank the engine or use a jumper lead on the ground electride and look for spark. I guess they can fail I have just never seen an HPDI coil fail. also test the compression, a loss of compression will cause that same symptom. as will a stuck injector. do ya have the service manual for the z200 t-rA motor ?
but yes the coils are the same if they are in the same location. also test the red plug cap for proper resistance.

Re: 2001 Yamaha 200hp HPDI power loss Question for Rodbolt

Thanks, I just got it back from the marina that the boat was purchased from and it seems that the service manager forgot to tell us that they had disconnected the "throtle position sensor" and the motor is runing in safe mode? I must admit that i do not know alot about these motors so iam not sure if i am being fed a line or if this is fact. Still don't know why they told us it was all set to pick up if they were waiting for a part to come in and it was not fixed. In any case it has become there problem now and we are not real happy with the service at the un-named marina.

Thanks for the help Rodbolt and John from CT Fisherman.com for letting me know about this site it looks like it is going to be a good resource....

it will default to a fixed map.
you should have noticed an increase in idle speed and top speed cannot be reached.
ign will be fixed at 7* BTDC in neutral and 20*btdc in gear. I am thinking your getting a wax job.
