My outboard runs great while idling and at slow speeds, but it will take a full throttle and reach higher rpms. Any ideas?

Re: 2001 Yamaha outboard 40 HP

Ahoy, Frank.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Not real familiar with that engine, Franknow, but it sure sounds like it is down a cylinder. Most multicylinder 2 strokes will seem to be running fine at no/low load even when running on one. Put a load on 'em and they fail to respond.

With the engine at idle and on the muffs disable each spark plug and see what she does. If there is no change that cylinder is dead, if it slows or dies that cylinder is making power.

A dead cylinder may be lacking spark, fuel (carburetor), scavenging (reeds) or compression.

Another possibility is loss of throttle/ignition control linkage.

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)
