I have the subject motor on a 1984 Wellcraft V-20 Steplift hull.

I have three questions on the engine-

1. Frequently (although not all the time), the engine seems to smoke excessively at idle and under low throttle. The engine can put out a real cloud of smoke from the above water exhaust vent. I put in Quicksilver Premium Plus oil in the reservoir but I have no idea what oil was in it previously.

2. Occasionally, when powering up slowly, the engine loses power and will stall out. My dealer told me to try choking it while it starts to lose power to see if it helped/hurt. I've been able to try it once and I thought it brought the power back. Best guess is that the loss of power occurs at 1900 to 2000 RPM. The first few days we had it, the problem occured much more frequently.

3. At about 3200 RPM, the engine gets very loud with a metalic sounding resonance. It almost sounds as though something is loose. When you get above 3400 RPM, the noise goes away.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I've got the same problem on my 2003. Last Sun. it was fine in the AM but in the PM when I took it back out, it stalled every time. Got the rig 1300 miles away in FL so am waiting for a day I can tke it to a authorized rep. N. of Dallas. It may be a week or so and I'll post the outcome. This problem has been posted a few other times- sounds like to me, Merc may have a design or quality problem! Think I should have stuck to Johnson/Evinrude. My 20 year old 115 Johnson has never missed a beat.

Were the fuel hoses, hose nipples, fittings, anti-siphon valve and fuel tank pickup tube checked before installing a new engine on 1984 boat.
