Anyone know why my alternator belt squeels?
My dealer told me that the serpentine belt is normal to be loose.

Also, anyone else with this motor have a problem with the starter turning slow (all the time). I have new batterys, heavy duty cables. Maybe this is normal for 4 stroke?

It is not normal to be so loose that it would squeal.

Re: 2002 4 stroke Yammy belt squeeling

Ok, I posted this question at my friends house for him, I dont think he can get on the site. I am sure he is going to ask how it can be tightened, and if it will affect his warranty, and why the dealer told him if it was normal. Is it a problem you have seen before? I wonder if he should have another mechanic work on it at a different shop, or just demand that it be fixed where he bought it. It is only about 6 mo in use.

I would take back to dealer. The alt could be overcharging and causing the squeal. what size and year motor?

I've heard similar complaints about the belt squeeling on the Yamaha 200 hp 4 stroke on a different forum.

The 200-225 4 stroke Yamahas do not have an alternator belt. The alternator is located under the flywheel like most other outboards.

The wide timing belt is toothed and can't slip on the toothed pulleys. Are you possibly hearing a noise from the tensioner pulley and bearing?

Re: 2002 4 stroke Yammy belt squeeling

It is a 2002 225hp. I just got back from the the water, we went out in his boat. The belt rarely squeels, and it is not real audible. He is thinking of tightening it himself. He said he took off the plastic housing, and he said there is about 1 inch play in the belt.
Do you know if 1" is normal?

He said he went up to the dealer and asked the mechanic would look at it for him if he pulled the plastic cover and bring it to him and the mech. agreed. He took off the cover and brought it down there. The mechanic said, when would you like to make an appointment. And when he finally looked at the belt, he said aragently, "thats normal"...long story short, he spent 16K on this motor and he gets treated like that.

No wonder he just wants to do it himself. I wonder if he should take it to another dealer?

If it has 1 inch slack like you said, I think that would be to much, I know nothing about this engine , but if the cam belt comes off, probley kiss a few good valves goodby. I would call Yamaha, You didnt buy that thing in Citrus did you?

no, in oak hill i think, I will ask him. the bearing could be a possibility, I will let him know to check it. I hope it has a grease fitting.

About the belt, yes it has teeth, so we are talking about the same thing, I think he thinks it drives the alternator too. I heard it and it sounds like a fan belt slipping.

I will suggest he calls Yamaha, I am sure the number is in his manual.
