Hello all,

I have an oil leak on one of my DF140s. These are 2002 engines with 345 hours on them. All services up to date. I just purchased the boat and do not have the owners manual for the engines and am not familiar with the oil system so I was going to throw out the symptoms and see if anyone can shed some light on them. Unfortunately the boat is not located where I am right now and I wont be able to get back to it until the weekend but was hoping to head down armed with some ideas to try.. hence this post :).

Anyway, I noticed some oil dripping onto the steering and subsequently onto the transom. The oil horn didnt go off, but obviously I shut down the engine and have not started it since. The oil seems to be coming out of the cowling and dripping down the front and onto the lower unit.. see pictures attached. After reading some posts, possibly it could be the oil drain plug? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Charles

Welcome to iboats. First, I recommend you buy a Suzuki Service Manual. Best case is the engine was recently serviced, and what you have is just residual oil from a filter change that wasn't wiped up completely. You will need to pull the engine cover and and remove the plastic side cover to really see what is going on. The filter could be leaking I suppose. Good luck.

Thank you for the reply JRJ. I am ordering a service manual right now.

Can anyone give me a quick list of things to check beyond the drain bolt and the filter?

Re: 2002 DF140 oil leak ?

i had a similiar thing happen to me this spring.

i have a df115 '02.

i had enought oil in splash well in front of the motor that raised a red flag.
it was dripping in the tilt up mode on the mooring after running for 30 min to 60 minutes of use.
popped the cover and the side cover but couldn't tell where it was coming from. checked the oil filter for leaks and it was tight.
checked the oil level and sure enough it was down a 1/4 on the dipstick.

dealer serviced it by replacing the dipstick o-ring, and both powerhead gaskets. about $600.

oil stopped dripping and and everything is great now.

hope this info is helpful.

Re: 2002 DF140 oil leak ?

Hi,

I have a 2001 df140 that was leaking oil. Found out the oil pan was damaged (hole in it, engine leaked more heavily when it was in the upright position) when a non suzuki dealer changed out the impeller. There is a shift shaft that must be alligned perfectly when the lower unit is put back in place. It's the shift rod has a male female connection at the bottom. If it is not seated properly when the lower unit is put back in place the rod is longer than it should be and pushes up into the oil pan housing which can cause a puncture. One other thing, Suzuki is of no help in working with a customer and if you don't have a good dealer to push on Suzuki for some answers then you're stuck.

The other thing is that there is a rocker arm that stabilizes the shift rod and bolts up into the oil pan housing. those two bolts could be leaking if they were not torqued down enough. That would be a simple thing to fix...probably 30 minutes to take off the lower unit...secure those bolts.

it could also be something as simple as a faulty oil filter...make sure they put the right filter on the engine...did they use a suzuki filter...could be something simple like that too..

one other thing to consider, the DF140 is the only engine I know of that has an oil cooler under the filter. check to see if the oil is also comming out of the cooling water passages is the lower unit. The cooler may have an internal leak, especially if it wasn't properly flushed on a regular basis.
