Hi everyone. My 2002 Evinrude 225HP FICHT has this problem: when I was on plane at around 4000rpm, I let off the throttle a little bit and the "HOT" light is lit and the engine lost power(I think this is a self-ptotective feature to restrain the motor when something is wrong?) then I touched the water coming out of the cooling system, the water is cool. When I opened the engine cover, the engine was not super hot or anything. then I shut it off and tried to start it again. it started, accelerated and went back to plane flawlessly. However as soon as I let off the throttle from around 4000 rpm, the same thing happened. Can you guys give me some thoughts on this issue? thanks! Wayne

The overheat sensor is simply a thermostat that closes at the overheat temperature and shorts to ground, This short to ground complete circuit to buzzer and gives puter signal that an over temp condition exists. Maybe check wiring that may short when engine is slowing revs and timing is changing?

I haven't changed it since I got the boat one and a half year ago.

If you mean you didnt do it when you bought it then, then you must do it now as its like a car oil change you have to know how long its being in there. It could cause your problem if its worn and not able to pump enough in certain rpm.
And Hoser's point is good too
