Sorry this is quite long. Had my 2002 F40 TLRA worked on by local Yamaha mechanic ? would not accelerate but idled fine. They worked on it in Nov 2008 and I didn't try running the motor until June. Not good, but here's the good part. I go to start the motor and it will only start with heavy priming and quits after 5-10 seconds. Called my mechanic to see if he would look at it since he was the last one to touch the motor and this was the first time I started it. He refused to do anything at his expense and told me to take my business elsewhere. A friend convinced me to tear them down myself. So I did.
When I pulled the bowl off the Top carburetor, a black rubber cap thing fell out on the table. I wasn't sure if this was good or bad so I decided to take the second (middle) carburetor and disassemble it very carefully to see where the rubber cap thing resides. I carefully removed the bowl from the middle carburetor, removed the float and there was this black rubber cap plugged snuggly into a port - the port where the Jet is screwed into. So, I pulled the bowl off the third (bottom) carburetor and was completely amazed as I watched the same rubber cap roll out of that bowl too.
I took the 2 carburetors and re inserted the rubber cap in its proper place, reassembled everything and the motor started up and ran great. Amazing.
Here are my thoughts: I don't think there's any way my mechanic could have rebuilt the carburetors and had what happened transpire. Not to mention that the engine would not idle or run more than about 5-10 seconds. The two plugs just didn?t fall out sitting in the garage for 7 months. They actually fit quite tight. They can't vibrate out unless they were never pressed in properly.
Anyone an expert on these? What?s your thoughts? Do I have any recourse with my mechanic?
