Engine runs fine but between 1000 rpm and 1500 rpm it becomes very rough and seems like it is about to stall (is in gear). Just started-idle speed is fine as is accelleration but real tough to maintain 5 mph in no wake zone. Engine has approx. 100 hours-due for service next week.

Plugs, sensor, exhaust nipple????

Have not had the 100 yet am trying to schedule it for next week, oil is the Bomb oil. I don't even think I have 100 hours on the engine due to lack of use (got the engine last year as a 2002 leftover new).
Thanks

Is the engine propped to turn about 6000 rpm with a normal load of fuel, gear, and people? Or is the rpm much lower?

Hello Seahorse- I have a four blade SS Bomb Prop on the boat-with a full tank of gas and gear and two persons on board, WOT is approx. 5600 rpm's- it is a 1990 25 ft pilot house Parker-engine is on a bracket (heavy boat).

You are lugging the motor and will see a difference in performance and drivability if you go down one size in prop pitch. You want that motor to run close to 6000. It doesn't even put out 250hp until about 5800 rpm (actually 5750). If your linkage is set up correctly on the engine, the prop change should get rid of the vibration that you talk about.

Also make sure the exhaust sensor fitting has been checked for carbon blockage.

I use a pair of the 250's and need to regap the plugs after 40 hours and replace every 80 hours. 40 hours and the gap goes from 028 to 045. The engine eats the center electrodes real fast.

Using the Champion plugs as stated on the label.

Anything off with these engines, change or regap the plugs. Also, do a nut and bolt tightness check every 50 hours. I found all the bolts loose on the upper crankcase head and 2 sheared off. ALso loose injector bolts.

Thanks for the recs., will get a prop and check and regap the plugs.
Where is the exhaust gas fitting located so I can check it for carbon?

You will see a small diameter rubber hose at the EMM (computer box) and follow it down past the plastic diaphragm housing to the lower stb. side. You have to remove the side cover screws and move the stb. pan out for access. Remove the hose then use a deep socket to remove the sensor tube.

There is also a bulletin about a stiffener piece for the crankshaft position sensor bracket for 2002 3.3L blocks. Make sure that has been done and the sensor set to the minimum clearance spec. see your dealer.

Thanks Seahorse, I think the bracket was changed, I had a harmonics problem at high end and the Bomb sent the dealer a bracket to change.

Sea Horse-Took the boat to the dealer two days ago and just got the boat back-spark plug gaps had eroded to .080 that was the only problem-runs smooth again ( no problem codes in the computer).
Dealer said the gap should be check every 50 hours and it should be set to .040, is that correct, I've heard that it should be .030?

Gap should be .028-.030". You will see that printed on the silver EPA sticker just below your model/serial number tag on the port side transom bracket, and in your owner's manual, and even in the factory service manual.

If you change props to get better rpm, you will see a big difference in drivability and sometimes in spark plug life.
