2002 Johnson 40hp stalls when fogging top cyclinder only

Sadly I had to winterize the boat today and when doing so I found that when I fogged the top carb the engine stalled and when I did the bottom carb the rpm's increased. This has never happened to me in the past. In past years the rpm's would drop on both top and bottom but never stall in one and increase in the other. It has been running a bit rough lately. Any clues? I'm thinking gummed up carb or weak spark?

Sounds like your bottom carb needs a good cleaning. Running lean. Check it out before you take it out again.

I think I will rebuild them both over the winter and I will be ready to go come spring.
