2002 Merc 40 hp can U identify part?

on the left hand side of the motor directly above the oil dip stick is a box with yellow wires coming out of it. #88-3071-1 2 8 8 1
(not sure how to post photo?) Is it the rectifier? There are melt/burn marks were the plugs connect. Bow is black and shiny metal. Any one know of online parts manuals?

yep thats your regulator,should.nt be hard to get a new one,looks
like it was burning,you should be able to use your motor with it unplugged
it just wont charge your battery
