2002 MERCRUISER 6.2 MPI STALLS

I have a 2002 Mercruiser 6.2 MPI that stalled out when going from 3500 to 4000 RPMS (ran fine for 30 minutes at 3500 coming home from fishing just prior), then would not start at first. It restarted after about 10 minutes and sounds like it wants to backfire when trying to start ran fine for a while and did it again. Did not see any water in the Fuel/Water Seperator. I have had the engine for a couple of years and always ran great until now. Appreciate any thoughts to help troubleshoot.

Get a Mercruiser service manual for your engine. There are lots of troubleshooting steps to go through in a systimatic order.<br />The first thing to do is check the basics, Cap, rotor, compression, etc. All the electronics in the world won't cure moisture or corrosion in the distributor or low compression, or worn out sparkplugs.

Tune-up is already on my list, but the way it died just did not sound like a tune-up problem.

The first thing would be to get a scan tool on it. If I did not have a scan tool , then the first thing I would do is get a fuel pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure when the failure occurs. Sounds like it could be fuel related.<br /><br />Dave

I appreciate the help, after alot of online searching there is a high fail part on these newer motors EFI and MPI mercruisers. It is an ignition sensor that sits under the distributor cap, p/n is 87-89215OA02 on my motor, around 50 dollars. Motor shuts down when hot and will restarts later. Will stall again when motors at temp again. May also run a little erratic. Hope this saves someone some money.......<br /> Thanks to all/Keith

6.2<br /><br />it will be much cheeper to buy the manual for 35 dollars and follow the tests<br /><br /> they really have a very easy to follow flow chart system and i am sure this not the last time you will need to do some service<br /><br />tommays

Are you sure you have the Thunderbolt distributor and not the GM distibutor? A serial number would help.<br />Sounds like you are planning on using the "search the internet and replace cheapest parts first till the problem goes away" method of troubleshooting.

Do you have the boost pump fuel system on this unit? If so you might start by changing the in line fuel filter between the fuel feed and the water separator.
