Wanted to know if it was worth maybe buying a 2002 merc 75 hp 4stroke that needs rebuild? Owner says the one cylinder went down..It is a complete motor and they are asking $500. What would this motor run to have somone rebuild it? Or i was gonna have some friends help me rebuild it...Please let me know if its worth it..

Problem in giving an answer is that you assume IT CAN be rebuilt..An engine can be blown and still described as a "bad cylinder" The seller is not the mechanic to give out advice.

Well you need think what could happen to a 4 stroke to take a cylinder down: blown head gasket or cracked head, water damage from above problem, dropped valve, timing belt broke and piston hit valve. If head is damaged and not repairable and you need to buy a NEW head thats about $2000. This motor is a cam over design and you change the wear pads on valves to adjust for cam/valve wear. It takes about 2-5 hours to correctly take apart ,measure, install and reassemble for valve train adjustments and is a PIA....
