i have a pair of these on my boat, and recently the port engine has had a significant amount of oily discharge just under the holes that exhaust is supposed to exit. it comes out from under the edge of part of the housing surrounding the lower part of the powerhead. the other engine does not do this at all. the engine is lx250txra. any suggestions appreciated.

when was the last tune up? when was the last 200 or annual service? this engine needs routine maint on a timely basis.
check the O2 sensor, the plug caps, the VST filter and the oil linkage as well as the fuel pumps. at 3 years I reccomend tossing the pumps and installing new ones just cause they dont live forever.
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt: OK, it sounds as if i need to visit a yamaha mechanic. what certifications should i look for in a yamaha mechanic as the last problem i had with this engine went undetected until i printed your suggestions and showed them to the marina. thanks again for you help.

sometimes the mere fact of course attendance is just not enough. I know techs that have wrenched for 20 years and still cant fix things. best you can hope for is the certs from the yamaha electrical and fuel system courses. ask to see the gold stickers for attendance.
the oily discharge is normally unburened fuel washing the carbon from the exhaust. could also be other problems. with the O2 sensor you must fix it.
good luck and keep posting

ok, so i am an idiot. it turns out that the reason i was getting the oily stuff down the back of the engine was because the three spark plugs on the port side of the engine were loose and allowing exhaust gases to come around the plugs. wish it was not my fault but it is. question is did i do damage to the cylinders/pistons/rings by running it like this over the last couple months.
