The engine turns over but when it starts to fire it acts as if the ignition is too far advanced and the starter motor has difficulty turning it over. I have a new starter and added a second earth strap. I've also checked the timing and seems ok - My boat is a FourWinns and it's impossible to see the timing marks so I've transposed them to another part of the crankshaft pulley. My Seloc manual doesn't give a timing setting but it's about 5 degree btdc which I would expect to be ok. The engine will start and once its running it seems fine,

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I have your exact engine installed in a FW 214. A few years ago, as part of seasonal commissioning, I had the engined "tuned". The tech cracked the new rotor during installation or it was cracked right out of the box. In any case, the boat didn't run well from the get-go and then simply refused to start. Ran the battery down a couple times trying all matter of things trying get it to start. It would almost light off, but never would start. Back to the shop it went. A lot of shop time was spent diagnosing the problem. Replaced the cracked rotor. End of problem. Nary a hint of starting problems since.

Do a compression test.
Get the timing marks fixed.
Worked with a guy who did his timing by "EAR"
I usually had to follow behind him and set it right.
