Fooling around with this 2002 50TLRA trying to change out the tilt/trim relay. Coming out of the relay itself there are three wires. I know where the two colored wires connect but where does the short black ground wire connect to? I don't see it in any of the wire diagrams in the service manual I have.

Can someone please enlighten me as to where to connect this ground wire? This is the short black ground wire with a ring connector that comes out of the relay box itself.

Thanks!
Brad

Probably ground towards the engine block, double check if there’s a screw available close to t where you can put it.
had a hole bunch of grounds for other parts (for ex oil reservoir sensor) on my 2003 and most always ground towards the block :)

The Yamaha service manual clearly depicts the ground connection point for the relay ground. It is in the electrical section.

Thanks for your answers! I do have it connected to one of the mounting bolts for the relay itself. Pretty sure it's screwed into the block but will make sure when I return to the location of the motor. I just don't remember exactly where the old one was connected. It was dark and late and I was pretty tired. One of those brain farts an old man has occasionally I guess.

The Yamaha service manual clearly depicts the ground connection point for the relay ground. It is in the electrical section.

Your manual may show it clearly but the one I have access to clearly does not. Mine shows only the sky blue and the light green wires and where they go. Doesn't show that black one at all. That's why I posted the question asking for help. It would have been more helpful if you would have verbally told me the location or even better posted a picture of it or a copy of the page showing where it goes. Thank you for your effort though!

I try to teach a man to fish rather than give him a filet o fish.

Page 8-4 of Yamaha manual LIT-18626-01-81 (50TLRW) or LIT-18626-02-65 (50TLRC) depicts the ground point connection.

The ground connection point for the T&T relay is just to the lower right hand side of the starter motor. On the block.

Mr. Bosco, I do understand your logic and I apologize if I came across as a smart a**.

I got it all back together today after I remembered how that black wire was connected to the old relay. Amazing what a little rest can do for you. That black wire which is one of three colored wires coming out of the relay, the other two being the sky blue and light green which go to the trim/tilt motor. The black wire actually connected to the black lug on the front of the relay. Then another black wire ran from that lug over to the bottom right of the starter where it was grounded along with two other black wires,

I must have looked at that page 8-4 a hundred times last night. When I got home tonight and read your response I went back to it and sure enough...there it was. I DID see where it made the connection. Your last post DID make me look again and I finally saw the light. Thanks for being a little more specific this time around. I must give credit where credit is due...YOU WERE RIGHT!!!

I also was referencing page 5-7 along with 8-4. I still can't find that wire on that page although they have all of the others there.

Thanks again for your time and patience!

It is tough to admit a mistake. A male genetic characteristic. I know from first hand experience.

Kind of like asking for directions huh?

I certainly have made my share of mistakes during my life, as most have, and I don't mind owning up to them. I attribute this one to being overly tired and a little frustrated. My first post on this was at almost 1:00 AM so I was pretty wore out.

I didn't even look at the diagrams again until after I got back home yesterday evening and was finished putting it back together. It definitely helped to look at it online where I could enlarge it a good bit instead of looking at a piece of paper.

Note to self: Bring magnifying glass next time. LOL

Thanks again!
