i aquired this 2003 motor from my dad its a 15 hp 2stroke mercury when i first start engine it idles perfect and run fine at wot when i stop to fish after some time gos by i try to start engine and it wont start i squeze the bulb but it is already hard i try the choke and pull start rope severl times still no start if i hold the carb butterfly open about haff way it will start and run but it idles rough when i shift it in forward gear and try to acelrate it boggs down if i play with the trottle a little it will go to running perfect again i thought the timming was incorrect so i cheacked it at idle it is 10 deg. i then cked. idle mix screw it seams to be right this motor seems to have a carb problem or fuel pump problem? could it be fuel flooding problem this happens not every time but i start engine some times run right and some times i have to pull starter rope several times to get motor to run every trip i have been on i had to take cowling off and jimmy it to start any help i wood apriciate. thanks.

Sure sounds like a flooding condition.
Seems odd that the fuel pump would go bad on such a new motor. But it may be the culprit.
Rebulid kit is only about $12.
Gotta start somewhere, might as well be a cheap part. :)

Hi roscoe thanks for your opinion I thought that my problem might be from flooding but i never had fuel flowing from the carb inlet or excess fuel in the exquest stream so i dissembled the carb, and fuel pump and start chargepump or choke pump upon eyeballin the float level at rest it looked like it was set to low in relationship to the main jet inlet so i reset the float to ride alittle higher in the float bowl it looks like the idle circut in the venturia is a little higher than the main.jet the next thing i did was ck. the fuel pump reed valves to see that they set flaton there inlet and outlet seats which they do also the diaphram was in perfect condition .the fuelplungerpump or whatever it is called squrits fuel into the reed valve perfect so i then reassembled the carb and installed back to motor .The motor started the first pull and starts every time now in the test tank and idles perfect i have to wait for the weekend to test in open water under real fishing conditions . wish me luck.
