Hello,

We have a 2003 Glastron w/ 3.0L engine. Twice the spring the engine has overheated, alarm only came on for 15 secs max and temp went back down according to the temp gauge. Not sure if that plays into our current issue or not...

We have the boat on a lift on the lake and when it is not in use for a few days, as soon as the prop hits the water there is a "oil slick" that is created. Once the engine warms up the leakage goes away. I believe this is engine oil and not gear oil because it doesn't have the distinct smell of gear oil.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

The engine oil is still good and the gear oil is not milky at all...

Thanks!

Does your engine have power steering? If it does, that is another possibility with the oil entering the cooling water form the power steering cooler.

Howdy

How did you check the outdrive lube and verify it was not milky?

When was the last time the water pump impeller was replaced?

The boat does not have power steering...

We have taken the screw off at the top of the outdrive multiple times before and after use and the dipstick has always had clear lube on it.

The water pump impeller has not been changed at all and the boat has been used sparing throughout the years. This was one thing we were thinking of replacing in hopes of solving this issue.

Thanks!

Water mixed with drive lube tends to settle to the bottom of the drive. You have to pull the propeller off and remove the lube drain plug to truly check for water intrusion.

The impeller should always be checked and replaced after any engine overheat. By the time you hear the alarm, there's a possibility there's already been damage done.
