I have a 2003 Reinell 230 with a volvo penta 5.7 GXI. The motor only has about 30 hours on it. and it hasn't been started in 4 or so years (just purchased boat from a family member). It was winterized by the dealer but like 4 years ago. It will start with starting fluid but won't stay running. The motor and boat are immaculate so it was not from misuse. As far as i can tell it's not getting fuel. I've checked to make sure the kill switch wasn't tripped but other that that, not familiar at all with this motor. Please help!!!!!!

Does it still have 9 year old fuel in it? If so you need to get rid of the fuel. In the mean time I would try running on an external tank. Replace the spin on fuel filter as well before you do anything else.

Quit using the starting fluid. Its very bad for and can damage your engine.

Yeah I only used about 3 squirts of fluid. I just wanted to make sure it would fire. how do I use an external tank? I have an oout board tank for a diffent motor. Can I use that? How do I attach to the existing system? Thanks again for all of your help.

DO NOT run it on the old gas that was in the tank. If there's old gas in there you might as well start by draining that out. Take the line coming out of the tank and hook it up to small fuel pump and just pump the gas that is in there out.

Once that gas is out fill it up with good clean gas and try again. That old gas will NUKE your motor (like it did to mine) and you'll be looking at a valve job or a rebuild so just don't do it.

In addition, you could remove the clip to the fuel pressure regulator and drain any remaining "gunk" from the fuel rail - place a clean rag when you do it to see what comes out. You might want to inspect the screen on the fuel pressure regulator while you have it out. When you turn the key on, the fuel pressure assembly will replenish with new fuel from the external tank. You may have to run either Seafoam, or some Total fuel system cleaner to get the injectors clean.

finally its running! Thanks for the help! I still only have one injector spraying though. So you know of a DIY for injector removal/cleaning? I was also wondering if you knew of a site that i could get injectors. I can buy all the fuel system except injectors on all the sites I've been on.
