2003 50 merc outboard

After vent on my tank close running about 1\4 mile the motor shut down. took about 5 min to start back now there is a ticking sound around the head area. But the engine still performs well at idle and top end. Been doing this for about a month And it's not any louder or quieter.<br />any comments to this matter.

firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."<br />sounds like she ran lean. what do your plugs look<br />like? what is the compression now?<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

2 or 4 stroke ?<br />If you have a 4 stroke your fuel pump is run of the cam at rear of the head .When these type pumps run out of fuel they start to tick, this noise usually goes away when fuel is restored.I have not heard of a pump like yours getting damaged from no fuel but there is allways a first.Take the hood off and feel the pump at idle or when its ticking ,also try squeezing the primer bulb when running tho see if the noise goes away.
