Ok, this problem slowly raised it's head during my last couple outings.

Now it is hard to start, but can be started and kept running (rough) by pumping the throttle.

Was in Santa Monica Bay fishing yesterday, it idled rough and bogged up to about 2500rpm. At 3000rpm it ran fine.

So, I was able to get back to the marina, but it was real hard going in the no-wake zone.

At idle it normally quits or shakes bad. Need to pump the throttle to keep it going.

Also, hard to start when it is cold.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

You didn't mention which motor it is, but I had an almost identical problem happen to me about 2 months ago with my dad's 2002 Aquasport. Started running rough and in a short while it was almost impossible to idle, but open it up and it's fine. Turned out it was a piece of junk (technical term) in the needle seat of the carb, keeping the needle from closing at low throttle. High throttle was fine since the needle was supposed to open anyway. Give it a look, shoot some cleaner in the carb. On mine it required taking the carb apart to get out the junk.

is the choke opening after a couple minutes? My boat did the same thing when the wire fell off the electric choke. Was hard to start, didn't like to idle, but was fine when full throttle. Its fine when opened up because the throttle linkage forces the choke partially open after a certain point. Pop off the flame arrestor and take a look. Start the engine and over the course of a few minutes it should be slowly opening to being fully open. An extremely wrong idle mixture could do it too, but thats a stretch. Check the choke first.

FIXED IT!!

First, I swapped out the AC plugs with some champions. Made no difference. Then I took out the carb cleaner and sprayed it in the 2 tiny holes above the butterfly. Waa Laa...It runs great now. Also, bumped the idle up a tad. I hope this fixed it. Seems ok now. THANKS!!

I really figured that's what it was, that was exactly what happened to me. Glad you got it.

I suggest you look at getting a better fuel filter so it wont happen again.

Ken
