I have a pair of 2003 150 evenrude fitch engines. One seems to be buring oil at a normal rate and the other is using oil almost three times as fast.

I filled both 1.8 gallon reservoirs up before a recent trip. After running about 64 miles the port engine low oil light came on. The reservoir had about an inch in the bottom. I was able to pour oil from the other tank which was still 3/4 full.

I am using xd50 "gold" so need to get this corrected as soon as possible. Is this an adjustment problem or more severe issue? The Engine doesn't seem to be smoking any more then the other and both run pretty smoooth. Cant seem to find any threads on mixture adjustments. Does anyone know what could cause this problem and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance

Air leak in the gas side.
Check all of your hoses and connections.

Thats an easy check I can swap fuel lines and see if the problem follows the fuel lines. Can I get a quick explination on how and air leak in the fuel line can cause the oil to pump much faster? Wish I knew more about this injection system. I will make an effort to look up some info.

Thanks

Check the oil return line to the tanks.
Disconnect at tank end and check return flow to the tank. You may have a stuck pressure valve in the return hose.

Skyking, Whaler has given you advice for a carb Johnnyrude. Overoiling on such a motor can be caused by an airleak in the fuel line. Your DI motor should not suffer from that fate. The way I understand DI motors is that they still run about a 50::1 oil/gas ratio, but since they use so much less gas, the oil consumption is way down. Why not see if that is your observation as well?

A few things to check on the oil-burner is the temp of each cylinderhead. If too cool, below 130?, is is not good. Test the oil injector for internal leakage per the service manual. Test the oil pressure in the return line before the pressure regulator, at all speeds, to see if there is a restriction or a faulty regulator. Make sure the motor is propped for around 5800 rpm so as not to be overloaded and use more oil.

SYMPTOMS
&
SOLUTIONS

1. Oil consumption seems excessive with my motor. Is the ECU/EMM defective?

An ECU/EMM failure can not cause excessive oil consumption. The most likely causes of excessive oil use are - Oil lift pump failure, restriction (pinching) of the oil return line, oil injector failure.

Your usage cycle could also be a contributing factor. When the engine coolant temperature is below normal temperature, as the engine is accelerated above 2500 RPM, the oiling system delivers multiple injection shots. If this operational cycle is continually repeated, excessive oiling could be observed.
