I have a 2003 Johnson/ Suzuki 4 stroke that goes into overtemp alarm at 3/4 thottle and above. The dealer has replaced the impller in the water pump twice and the thermostats once. I continue to have the problem. When it alarms i only have to shut the motor off and restart and as long as I don't go over about 3/4 thottle it runs great. Any ideas?

I would take a heat gun with me and shoot the cylinders, all of them seperately to be sure that there is'nt an issue with any of them. Sounds like a t-stat issue, but you said they have replaced them, so i'm wondering if maybe one of the connections for the alarm is arcing and causing a false overheat.

mine (2-stroke) did that and it was the sparkplugs. Non resistors were installed by mistake, replaced with resistor type and problem gone. worth a look anyway

Overheating at slow speeds is typically a thermostat problem (stuck shut). Overheat at high speed is typically a bypass valve issue (stuck shut) provided the water pump is working and there are no other engine mechanical issues.

just to clarify- it wasn't actually overheating, the plugs caused interferance with the ecm and or guages.
