I bought a 2003 Kawasaki KLR 650 new 2 years ago.
Ever since I have had it, it seems to be either burning oil, or the oil disappears(I do not know where it would go though)
First of all, 3 months after I got the bike, I went for a 300mile cruise(highway driving). I made it about 200 miles when I heard clanging and pinging noises.
I pulled it over and ended up getting it towed back to the dealership. There was no oil in the case and the dealership said some kind of clip came off on the piston(can't remember exactly where it was).
Anyways, they fixed it and gave it back to me, all fixed.
But ever since I have got the bike, it uses oil way more than it should.
I went for a cruise on Saturday. About 100 miles of highway driving. I checked the oil before I left and it was full.
Today I checked it and it was just about empty. I had to add a half a liter of oil to top it up.
Does this sound normal to anyone? Should I use just over a half of a liter of oil for a 100-125 mile cruise?
I was cruising anywhere from 65-75 miles per hour during my trip.
I want to take the bike to the shop, but I am not sure what to tell them. How do I prove to them that it uses too much oil? The bike is covered under warranty still, but I do not want to have to pay any money at all for them to check the bike over.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Brother Chris.

Take it back pronto barrells probably not right [scored]rings not seating shouldn't use that much with no external leaks [rist pin clip came off?? orginally]You could do a fast compression test,or make sure it's not running lean check for air leaks [manifolds]Under Warranty Hummmm Do some fast checks yourself

Yep, a scratched cylinder wall is very likely the result of the wrist pin clip coming off. I had the very same bike and it didn't use any measurable amount of oil between changes. Your warranty should most definately cover this repair. I would think about what dolluper says... do a couple of simple tests yourself and then take it to the dealer. You'll be all the wiser if they try and 'snow' you, although it's not likey they'd try that since they've already been into the motor.
I put a dyno-jet (stage 2) and a supertrapp on mine. It's like a different engine with those mods. and it sounded great. I highly highly recommend it.

How do I prove to them that it uses too much oil?
Easy. Have the dealer fill the engine with oil and seal the drainplug and dipstick. The sealing can be done with a simple dab of paint.

Once it's proven that it is using oil, the ball is their court to fix it.

That's a good idea DJ :)

Take any paperwork with you for the work it had done previously too. That way they can't try and fob you off.

I assume you ran the engine in again after it was fixed last time?

Thanks fellows. I have been away for dental repair(ouch).
I am going to print this off and check what was suggested by you guys and test it myself.
I also like the idea DJ mentioned.
That way they know it was not tampered with and they can fix it.
I'll let you all know what happened after I take it to them.
Cheers,
B.C.
