Serial No. 0M618016
Current issue
Engine started as normal. Ran for about two seconds then shut off (like the key had been turned off). Checked kill switch. It is OK. Still will not start. Engine does turn over. If cranked for several (5+) seconds backfires occasionally. Pulled ignition coil wire from distributor cap and observed arc from coil wire to engine block screw while cranking. Removed distributor cap and inspected cap and rotor. Both looked good (neither was very old). Rotor did have a lot of rotational and vertical slack. Gear at bottom of distributor is worn. Lined up rotor at number 1. Checked that mark on crank aligned with notch on engine bracket. Pulled distributor. Couldn’t get old gear off. Replaced entire distributor (See note at end on past distributor finding). No change when trying to start. Didn’t really expect this to work but had been meaning to get rid of the rotor slop for a while. Symptoms sounded like maybe IAC. Replaced IAC. IAC muffler was missing from throttle body. Put in a new one. No change when trying to start. I should note that the boat sounds three short double beeps after I turn the ignition switch OFF. It has been doing that since I bought it five years ago so I thought that was normal.
Recent background
When returning from a pretty long outing a couple of weeks prior while in a no-wake zone, I got two beeps every minute until the engine was shut off. All gauges looked good so I kept going to the dock. Checked oil level and lube monitor. Everything seemed good and alarm didn’t repeat so I forgot about it.
Distributor oddity
Even though this is an eight cylinder engine, it has a six cylinder distributor. A couple of years ago when trying to get rid of a persistent misfire, I noticed the above mentioned slop in the distributor rotor. Ordered a distributor and replaced it. Boat would start but ran horrible and smelled of unburnt fuel. Pulled the new distributor and carefully compared it to the old one and noticed that the rotor pointer was off by about 90degrees when referenced to the “windows” in the rotor mounting surface. The old distributor was an obvious replacement and had a non-adjustable hold down clamp firmly attached. When I compared it carefully to pictures online, it matched the six cylinder part. This leads me to believe that a previous owner had the distributor replaced and that the Engine Controller had been reprogrammed to work with the six cylinder part. Regardless, I modified the hold down clamp to allow rotation of the distributor and put the old distributor back in. Then I rotated the distributor (figuring that engine torque would take out the slop while it is running) to account for the rotational slop and it has run great until this recent event. Don’t think this is relevant but I’m trying to be thorough.
