I have a 2003 Mercury 50 that I just bought. Battery was not charging. The yellow wires from the volatage regulator were melted. I replaced the regulator and charging was working while running on the garden hose in the driveway (thought all was fixed). I took boat to the lake yesterday, fired it up, it showed charging for a minute or so on the meter and then quit.
Where do I begin troubleshooting? Should I just replace the Stator?
In the 50's electrical / charging system, is there only the stator and the regulator/rectifier or is there somplace else to check/replace?
