2003 volvo penta melted impeller

My 2003 Stingray 180LS with Volvo Penta 3.0 overheated and melted the impeller as well as trashing the thermostat. No teeth were left on the impeller and I cannot find the missing chunks of rubber. Im handy but by no means a boat mechanic, and was hoping to get a few answers to my questions. I have disconnected all hoses with no sign of the impeller chunks.

1) Where should I look next?
2) Is it possible the chunks made it through the exhaust system and ended up in the lake?
3) I have been told that overheating the engine may have damaged the butterfly exhaust flapper... where is this and how concerned should I be?
4) The engine was run for five or ten minutes at 220 how much potential damage is there and what shoud I check for?

Let's start from the last in your list.

With no water, you was probably way over 220 but without the water, nothing on the sender but false information.

Volvo stopped using those in 98, so you didn't have anything to loose.

Some of the smaller pieces yes, but all, not hardly.

1 Where should I look next

Every place.
Why wasn't there water to the impeller to begin with? Did you have muffs on it while running out of the water? Was the water pressure and volume enough at the muffs?
If in the water did you pick up a plastic bag?
Was work done on the cooling system prior to the overheat? If so, what?

Here is the story... As you probably know that model has a hose connection on the engine. I hooked a hose up and ran the engine in my driveway for ten minutes as it was the first start up of the season, all was fine. Launched the boat, got it up on plane, five minutes later the alarm sounds. Remove the engine cover and found I forgot to put the cap on the engine hose connection. Waited for the engine to cool (poured lake water on the manifold to expedite cooling) I started the boat when the temp gauge fell below 120, would limp along for a minute or two and shut down when the temp indicated 200. Had to repeat this four times.

Ok... I have installed a new t-stat and impeller, also have checked and back flushed all hoses on the cooling system as well as removing the exhaust riser. Got good flow through all hoses and riser had no impeller chunks in it. Engine is still over heating. Doesn't seem to be getting water up to the t-stat housing. Im wondering if the dealer sold me the wrong impeller kit because the first one I purchased was the WRONG. The second trip he assured me it was the correct kit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW 2003 Volvo Penta GLP-B 3.0 with SX drive.

Did you replace the oring between the pump and pump housing? If not, the pump can suck air and overheat.

Thanks vwbugman69, I didn't change the o ring as it looked ok. Anything is worth a shot at this point so I will give it a try.
