Hey everyone!

I just bought a 2003 Glastron GX205 5.0GL & SX OD after being without a boat for a few years (divorce...ugghhh).

Anyway, just getting it cleaned up and running through maintenance on it. Today I noticed a rattling or pinging noise coming from the lower unit while on ear muffs in my driveway. The boat was not in drive and the noise would go away when at idle but it still has me concerned. There isn't any noise in the engine compartment and when I lake tested it I did not hear anything.

I don't really want to put it in gear while out of the water to see if it does the same thing but would if I needed too. Again, the noise isn't there when it is idling but when I rev the engine a little bit (2K) I can hear a rattling/pinging noise coming from the lower unit.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,...... Have you pulled a sample of the drive oil,..??

Look for water, or metal in it,....

Goes away around 2,000 rpm? The rattling should be in the upper not the lower
Common with most if not all SX's and DPS-A's

Google it. You will find a lot of Volvo Penta owners in the same boat.;)

with any new to you boat, you did do all the maintenance, including pulling the drive and inspecting the gimbal and u-joints, correct?

No water or metal in the oil, that looked fine. But the noise isn't there at idle. Only when the RPM's get up over 1000 does the noise begin.
I did not pull the outdrive, I don't have the equipment to do so. The drive boot looks almost new, exhaust boot looks slightly weathered.
It doesn't sound like a grinding noise but more so like something flapping against metal. At first I thought it may be an exhaust seal of some sort but researched that and found out Volvo did away with them in the late 90's.
Hoping it's just a minor noise and not something too be alarmed about. I guess if it gets worse I will take it into be looked at.

I’m nearly sure that someone on here said revently that some SX drives perhaps did have flappers in exhaust. I didn’t know that. Might be wrong.
