I want to change the water pump on my 2003 yamaha sx150txrb motor. I have a manual and the diagrams show the removal process. My question is does the shift rod come down with the lower unit or does it come out of the lower unit and stay on the motor? The book does not show that it drops with the lower unit but it's hard to tell.

I helped my brother change the pump on an older Johnson 150 and the shift linkage had to be disconnected under the cowling and came all the way out with the lower unit. Is the yamaha lower unit removal like this too?

Thanks,
Larry

I am 95% sure it stays with the lower unit, but wait for others to respond to be sure.

it is a 2 part system when you drop the lower unit you will see where they separate just be sure you get the lower shaft lined up with the coupler when you reinstall the gearcase. just remove the lower unit bolts you and drop the lower unit you don't have to take anything apart concerning the shift shaft

do a forum search on water pumps.
I have posted the step by step bolt by bolt instructions.
if it cannot be found maybe ill type it again.
