I would like to keep our fishing boat out (usable) all year this season. It is stored on a lift totally out of the water (Maryland). I was told by someone that this motor has an open cooling system and as long as the motor is tilted down the water will drain water out? So, i don't need to put earmuffs on every time and run with antifreeze? The owners manual says NOTHING about "winterization" only extended storage. Can someone shed some light on this for me please so i don't destroy a great motor. Thank you

Yes, there is no outboard that holds water, no water stays in an outboard. Don't have my crystal ball with me, so can't tell you anything else, since you didn't tell what motor you have.

Looks like the OP has a four stroke Yammy 115. As proviously mentioned, all cooling systems drain to the lower unit and out the drain holes when tilted to the normal run position.

I would flush with the earmuffs every time I feel it does a better job no need for antifreeze as motor will self drain but check how the boat lift holds boat is the stern lower than the bow to allow motor to drain. Than just follow normal fuel stabilizing and oil changes and greasing.

one more point thats not in any service manual and applicable to ALL yamaha motors with a garden hose flush device.
remove the flush connector from the mount and allow the water to drain out of the tube.
it can cause a problem.
