Hi All,

A quick question from Downunder.

I have a 2004 140 carb 2troke. I have had this motor from new and have only 41 hours on it. I spent the last few years restoring and replacing the transom on my boat (which was previously fitted with a 1982 140HP merc) which is why I only have 41 hours on it.

I would like to know if this 2004 140HP has any issues that may arise that it would be worth knowing about in advance.

People have been bagging out mercs for years and over here they got the nickname of 'black anchors'. I got my first when I was 13 (the 2004 is my forth) and as long as you keep the salt out and flush them everytime after use then they don't seem to be as much of a problem as folks make them out to be.

Cheers all.

Just a question or two. Last year of tha 140, according to all tha stuff I have, was tha '82 inline 6. This is USA, BEL., and AUS. version. So I'm trying to figure out exactly which motor you have. Have you got a serial number? Is it a V6 or Inline?..................

Re: 2004-140HP Merc 2 stroke carb

G'day,

Thanks for the reply.

My old 1982 140HP was a straight 6. I seized the powerhead (I can't remember why, but it did give me a lot of years service.

My 2004 140HP is a V6. Trying to get some solid info on the history of this motor is tricky

As far as I have been able to find out, Mercury no longer make big carb models now only EFI, Optimax and Verado's.

Cheers

Sorry Dukedog, forgot the extra info.

The serial number on my 140 is: 1B026280.

Model number: 1-140412DF

The 150HP of the same year has exactly the same power head displacement.

My thinking tells me that the 140 is a de-tuned 150. The 150 develops an extra 12Kw (16 HP) of power but that's about all the difference I can find.

Cheers

Re: 2004-140HP Merc 2 stroke carb

Thats a strange one as for as here in tha states. It is a carburated 2.5 liter motor. Tha only carburated 2.5 motors here are tha XR6 150, tha 175 and 200Tha plain jane carb 150 is a 2.0 liter motor. So just takin' a guess its real similar to tha XR6. If thats tha case its a very good, solid motor if taken care of. No out of tha ordinary problems.....But its still a mechanical peice..........D

Hey Dukedog,

Thanks for that.

An XR6?? Never heard of one.

I was just going over some more data.

The 140, 150 and 200 in this range in Oz all three have the same power head.

ie,
Piston dis - 153 cu in
Cylinder bore - 3.5"
Stroke - 2.650"

All have 40amp alternators.

Why was the XR6 different? was it because of the fact of V6 2.5l. How did they get the 150HP from a 2 litre? How much more could they wind it out?

I was incorrect on the power difference. Its 10 hp (duh).

Cheers

An XR6 is a strong 150 2.5L carb'd powerhead on a 4 1/4" hub, 1.78:1 ratio lower unit.

Marketed as a bass boat motor.

Pretty reliable, and snappy performers.

Is tha Oz version of tha 150 an efi motor? Just have a "feeling" that your 140 is tha same as our XR6 150. Still interesting though.............

John. think they only had tha little gearcase on tha first coupla years, may three. Then went to tha big case.............

Re: 2004-140HP Merc 2 stroke carb

Morning All,

The 140, 150 and 200 V6 that came out over here came in both styles, ie, EFi and carb. I bought my motor new and for a very very good price by Oz standards. It wasn't until later that I was told that Merc no longer makes V6 Carb models (which would explain the good price) if the statement is true.

My gearcase is a standard 1.87 : 1

I didn't want an EFi. I can fix carb's but I can't fix an EFi unit. Not good when you are 8 miles out in a filthy 6 foot swell with a 25 knot NE wind blowing.

GRP Bass boats are really only a new thing over here. Most blokes only buy above 115HP for offshore work. Most of our inland water was covered by smaller tinny's with around 50 to 60HP rigs. The GRP units are very pricey and you have to be gentle with them compared to a tinny.

Cheers
