I have a pair of 2004 Evinrude 175s on my boat I recently acquired and I tilted them up yesterday to check some things out and they are both stuck in the up position. No matter what I tried can’t get them down. The manual release screw valve is stuck on the starboard motor and one side of the screw head is broken off on the port motor. Anybody have any suggestions to get them down? Checked fluid since they’re up and it was full on both of them

Maybe this will help.

This is assuming the tilt trim is the same as mine (Fas-Trac).

With mine, I never was able to conclusively determine the issue. I trimmed it up to take it out of the pond and then it wouldn't come back down again. The motor would run but not move anything either direction. I assumed it was a broken coupler but it wasn't. Like yours, my manual release valve was stuck/broken. I think I ended up using an impact screwdriver to get mine out. I think part of regular maintenance should be to work that valve a few times a year.

I supported the engine with a ceiling hoist and I think once I got the release valve out, raising and lowering the hoist eventually got it free. I replaced the valve, took the the trim/tilt off of the boat and borrowed the spanner tool from a friend. Unfortunately it only fit the tilt ram but for me that was enough to get it apart and cleaned out the best I could. Fortunately it was in pretty good shape as far as corrosion goes. The outside paint had mostly come off, but the internals looked good. I flushed fluid through and blew compressed air through as much as I could. Put it all back together, painted it, and it works fine now. Make sure your electric motor goes back on the correct way with the wires on the port side or they will get pinched.
