I replaced my starter about on month ago on my boat and everything worked fine afterwards. Then a few days ago I decided to take it out and run it a bit. It ran fine on the way to my destination. Tied up to a bridge to fish a little, after about an hour i tried to start the boat and it acted like it was going to start then the starter was just spinning freely. Got towed in and took the starter how to inspect it and it looked good. Then took it to a local auto parts store and had it tested and they said it was good. I then decided to get a second opinion and took it to a local alternator/starter shop and he said it was no good. He seems to think the motor had to much compression therfore stripping the gears out on the starter. He seems to think I had water in top of my of the pistons. So i went home and took the sparkplugs out and sure enought all 4 plugs had moisture on them? Could this be from the exhaust manifold gasket leaking? Also with my boat being a 2004 would it have a flapper in the exhuast to prevent water going back into the motor? Any help would be appreiciated.

Is there any chance that when you changed the started you didnt put the shims back in. This would cause an alignment issue which may not be evident at first, if the starter was misaligned it would chew away at the gear every time you started it until it stripped it. Since the boat was running fine before the starter damage was noticed, water lock doees not seeem probable. Do you have water in your oil, milky oil?? Sometimes the exhaust manifolds rust out and can fill the cylinders with water, you would have milky oil if this was the case.

Did your engine diesel (run-on) when you shut it off? Many times when this happens, it sucks water back into the engine.

The new starter didnt come with any shims and the old one i took off didnt have any either. There is no water in the oil. The visible gear at the end of the starter is in good shape as well as the flywheel ( no damagage to any teeth) The motor did diesel when I turned it off. It does do that from time to time.

Were you able to put the braacket on the back of the starter back on to the new one? This keeps the starter from kicking off the flywheel. Did you use new starter bolts? They are knurled at the end and can only be used once.

I used the old bracket and it lined up just fine and yes I used the new supplied bolts. If bc the dieseled when killing the motor and if water was sucked back in the motor how do I prevent it from happening again???

Don can confirm, but I believe you want to ritchen the idle mixture and make sure the idle rpms are low enough (650-750 in gear in the water). You might need to take off the two caps, one on each side of the carb, to get at the mixture screws (if it is a holley carb)

The RPM's are at 650 when in neutral and yes it is a holly carb.

If this is happening after running the engine hard, let it idle for a few moments and even put the blower on to cool things a bit to see if that helps.

That can and will suck water back into a cylinder and cause a hydrolock.

Don I have read several ways on how to prevent it from dieseling. What should I do first to keep it from doing that? I always run 100% gas (87 octane) plus sometimes after a long ride the no wake zone maybe a long way from the dock. In my mind that's plenty of idle time to cool the motor off before shutting the engine down but like I said it will still diesel from time to time.
