Hey guys,

I bought a 2004 Crownline 202br this spring and now need to winterize it the serial number on the engine is OM681848. I have checked the manual but it lists several options where all the drain plugs could be located...could someone please help me locate them and any other info about closing it up for the season would be great!

Thanks!

Hi there, This really would depend on what drain system you have on your boat and unfortunately your engine serial number does not pinpoint exactly what system you have. It just mentioned you have a 5.0L MPI ALPHA DRAIN so it's a bit challenging to say for sure.

Does looking at the pictures in the manual help tell you what system you have?

Boatinfo - Mercruiser Service Manual nr. 31 - 2001-Up - 5.0L (305), 5.7L (350), and 6.2L (377) Engines

Re: 2004 5.0 mpi

I checked last night and I have the blue handle next to the remote oil filter, so I assume that means I have the single drain option (#1).

In the Merc manual it says to create a "fogging" mixture with outboard oil, gas and stabalizer in a remote fuel tank??...then disconnect the fuel system and run the mixure for 5 minutes. Is this necassary, or can I just spray fogging oil into the throttle body? The boat is being stored in a heated warehouse for 5 months btw.

With my old boat (3.0ltr merc) I filled the block with antifreeze to prevent corrosion, is the possible or necassary with this block?

Thanks guys!!

If it is MPI it won't fog out spraying in the throttle body. The computer will keep the motor running and burn off anything you put in there. In a heated warehouse for 5 months I would not spend the time fogging it. Fogging is more so for laying a motor up for a very long time.

As for filling the block it is a flip of the coin. Some people do it some people say air does not freeze. I will put some pink stuff int he block but only to delute any water that may be left in there. Your call.

If I were to put some antifreeze in there, what is the best way to get it in the block?

Disconnect the hose at the thermostat and pour it in there. Using a piece of flex hose and a funnel will speed up the process.

Ok thanks, ill look at that...will that get antifreeze in both sides of the engine?

On another note, should I be changing my fuel filter every year, in the fall or spring?

I have always changed the oil in the spring, in the manual it says to do it in the fall...any thoughts on that?

You can take off the thermostat ousing and pour it directly in to the block. Also make sure to put some down each hose. If you have a bravo3 outdrive make sure you put some in the line from the water pump to the housing as water can sit in there. Seeing that you are in canada and it gets way colder than down here in NC be extra dilligant about removing water and diluting what is left in the system.

I have an Alpha one drive, there should be nothing to worry about correct?

If I take off the housing will I need to get a new gasket?

Yep. That's why I use the hose trick. ;)

Just crack open your drains and add until you see bright pink coming out. Yes it covers both banks. Don't forget to drain the manifolds too.

Ok, now you have we wondering...in the manual it only shows the blue handle at the top and one drain plug at the bottom...are there more than that?

That is the single point drain system. Those tend to be problematic. Remove all the hoses and skip the antifreeze.

Re: 2004 5.0 mpi

Hey guys, just a follow up...I opened the blue handle and removed the 2 blue drain plugs at the front of the engine (one on the thermostat housing and the other next to the drain at the bottom)...it drained for a good 5 minutes and then trickled for 5 minutes. I then removed the hoses from underneath both manifolds and nothing came out...I can only assume the engine is empty...

Thanks for all your help!

One trick I use is to catch all the water draining out of the drain plug. I use a pail marked at 5 gallons to ensure that all the water is out. Then poke a hole with a wire to ensure block and manifolds are dry. Use AF if you wish after that but that's another debate.

Poke a hole in what? Would you leave the handle open or close it for storage?

Thanks!

Poke the block drain holes and the manifolds to ensure they are not blocked with rust and crud. Then I close the main drain plug , the blue handle on my engine, and then I fill the system with AF through the thermostat...although that is optional. I sleep better knowing I have -100 F AF in there especially in our neck of the woods...I'm in Midland not far from you and it gets quite cold here.
